BIG FRONT. LITTLE BACK.
Staffing agencies like to put on a big “front” and then don’t “back” it up with the same level of delivery.

Uncoventional Thinking….

I just finished watching Moneyball, a story about a washed up baseball player that had tons of potential, but no delivery, and his discovery of a man and a methodology that would change the way baseball players were evaluated, played and bought, and inevitably changed the whole game of baseball.  I thought to myself, what is it that is broken with Blockbuster and would a philosophy like this change it’s direction toward positive.  A revolutionary way that would take an underdog (like the Oakland A’s) make a total turnaround… One that would make no sense to most, but when set in motion would have tremendous success and have all their competition scratching their heads …. if, in fact one, there is one.

Moneyball was based on mathematical and statistical analysis known as Sabermetrics, which weighed players on many factors and made what baseball considered losers into actual winners (when played in the right formulation).

Then I considered the fact that the obvious route for all movies will be online streaming, based on online experts stating that DVD’s are quickly becoming pas say.  So, if that’s true, companies like Redbox and Netflix are only living on borrowed time.

But then I asked myself a few more questions, like why it was that back when Blockbuster was at it’s peak and movie theaters started to go out of business (in favor of the the obvious convenience and economic benefits that home viewing offered), that suddenly movie theaters made a resurgence and recovery, in spite of their inconvenience, high prices, etc?

Then a broader question, why do people still love to shop in stores when so many things are available online, or why do we work out in filthy gyms?

There is in fact a social aspect, a social need, if you will, that is not met when we are locked up in our homes.  We, as humans, need the company of others, even if it’s just passerby’s.   We like to get in on the gossip, hear what others are commenting on, what they like, and oddly enough this peaks our interest more that an online article would.

So, if Blockbuster is going to survive, the answer is not to capture more Redbox customers or be another Netflix, the real answer is to recapture the romanticism that enticed customers in the past, the social-ability aspect, the charm and the fun of going to the in-store Blockbuster video library and overturning an unexpected gem.  Being greeted with exceptional customer service and being helped by a human that listens and understands your needs and helps you make decisions.  Not through sales pressure, but by getting to know you and catering to your specific needs.

So the question in my mind is, as a company (Blockbuster) are we killing the one thing that will make us inevitably survive?  Are we cutting off the hand that feeds us, by killing so many of our stores?  Shouldn’t we also open new stores and give them a fresh look?  This will turn peoples assumptions on their head, if we do.

My recommendation: For Blockbuster to survive we, like the theaters of old, must re-capture the social fun and excitement that once gained our original customer base, making experiences fun, increasing better customer service, building a wider library of movies not found elsewhere.  Making the customers feel like they are really cared for and catered to.  Getting to know their wants and needs.  Using social media platforms to capture data, and allow our customers to tell us how to improve store experiences…

The understood reality is that stores are closing because they are upside down, our infrastructure and store management is old hat and lack of traffic is killing them one-by-one.  But having the “me too” attitude, in my mind, is the wrong way to go.  Improving what we’ve already got may be the only and inevitably the best solution!

I feel this needs to be explored much further.

What’s In Store for Blockbuster?

Okay, I don’t have any control over what’s going on in-store right now, but I did get quite a good response after presenting internally to marketing this week.  When, to their surprise, I unveiled a new design for the outside of the Blockbuster store chain, followed up with a solid rationale for doing it.  A couple more hurdles to overcome… funding being the biggest!  That’s all I’m saying for now…tease, tease…

Have You Hugged a Shark Lately?

Okay, maybe not the greatest of ideas, I’ll admit.  But sharks are really not our enemies.  A new study, or rather multiple studies have proven that due to our ignorance about our oceans ecology, we have over-fished it, to the point of virtual extinction, (in the case of many aquatic species).  Couple that with the fact that our oceans are warming up, due to the over-all warming of our earth, and you have the makings of a nursery for a new kind of pest.  Jellyfish.

And man have they taken off.   Jellyfish multiply 100 times faster than rabbits, and that’s a mild estimation.  They have adapted to the point that they can live in the harshest of environments, live in lifeless zones that fish cannot and are impervious to temperature changes and even oxygen loss.  They are multiplying so rapidly that they are overtaking fishing communities, poisoning fresh catches, clogging precious ocean cooling systems in power plants, oil rigs and major ocean vessels.  Many are poisonous and some are quite deadly.

Jellyfish are the perfect storm.

Do you want the Good News or the Bad News first?

I know your thinking, “If this is true, it gets worse?”.  So that’s why I’ll start with the good news.  The good news is that the Jellyfish has one primary predator that consumes them… and mind you, not many predators are out there that do.  I mean, I wouldn’t eat one, would you?

The truth is, if we don’t get serious about this problem, as fast as it’s growing, we may find ourselves consuming one, in some form or another, in the very near future… But, I digress.  The Jellyfish has one primary predator that has a veracious appetite, and could be our veritable knights in shining armor.

Yep, you guessed it.  It’s our friend, the shark.

Okay, now for the bad news… I warned you there was more.  The shark can’t help us the way we need it to because it has a predator as well.  You know the answer to this one.

If we don’t completely halt our overfishing of sharks, where will it lead us?  My feeling is, lets pour the “Save the Whales” money into the “Save the Sharks” fund and then maybe we won’t be eating Jellyfish in the future.

Truth In Advertising

Okay, I really like the cute little plugs that Nissan has in it’s new Happy Birthday to the Leaf TV commercial, but why is it that so many people believe that this is actually a real solution to our energy problem.  PLUG YOUR CAR IN TO AN OUTLET!!?!!… Really.  This is the best idea we can come up with?  Alright, maybe I have a slightly greater understanding of our energy sources, where they come from and what are real feasible solutions for our future.  Are we really in a shortage crisis with oil and gas? Talk to any oil and gas man, (actually in the industry) and they’ll tell you absolutely not.  Maybe one quarter to one third total loss of our potential resources since we moved from steam to gasoline, but we’ve still got hundreds of years of supplies, that’s not a problem for my kids, or even my grandchildren.

So lets poo-poo all that in favor of the environment.  I mean obviously this whole global warming trend and ozone depletion should have Washington really putting pressure on automakers to push the envelope, re-tool and re-distribute so that we’re making real strides toward a cleaner tomorrow, right?  At least that’s what we’re being sold. But Electricity?  Seriously?

If, and I repeat “IF” a car produces it’s own electricity through battery cells that recharge themselves continuously through the movement of an advanced alternator then YES, by all means, this is a great head start.  But when Washington said they were going to go to a fully electric car that you plug in, I asked myself do these morons have rocks for brains.

Let me explain by asking a question.  Electricity primarily comes from what source?

No, it’s not nuclear, and yes that is proving to be very dangerous and harmful to the ecosystem.  No, it’s not wind turbine power, water driven, geothermal or any of those other ideas that just aren’t working very well….  It comes from burning coal.

Yes, most of the worlds power comes from the burning of coal.  Coal that has to be strip mined, destroying the surrounding ecosystems, poisoning the water systems, killing off plant life and poisoning local inhabitants and yes, you guessed it, reeking havoc on our ozone — remember that’s what the rock-brains are supposed to be fixing?

Now, oil spills are nothing to ignore, but running our cars on electricity is no laughing matter either.  By all means, get a Prius… one that runs on gasoline, (not the fully electric version), and push your local rock-head in congress to push for Natural Gas reform…  Now there’s a great idea who’s time has come.

Oh, one more thing, most coal comes from China – yep more money for China — now are you seeing the rock-heads reasoning.  Natural gas is plentiful, much, much less harmful for the environment and most of the cash crop is right here in the grand old U.S. of A.

And, don’t even get me started on Ethanol.  Tell those corn farmers to make corn mazes out of their fields…  Hey, it’s a multi-million dollar industry right now!  Don’t believe me, just ask Brett Herbst .
